The Futures of Media Technologies

5 Year Plan

Year 1 -

Hardware  - The new piece of hardware I think we should consider buying for the college is GoPros as we can catch much more exciting footage and we can tie them places you can't with a massive canon or sony. The specific GoPro I think we should invest in is the HERO3+ Black Edition

http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero3-black-edition?gclid=CjkKEQjwlIqdBRDy6JSK4Lmn1akBEiQAVa9dPYdwjlkxr89TElRohc0yTAXomwsInKdJ-VmPk4B6mwnw_wcB

 Price ; £359.99

Software - The new piece of software I think we should get is a pre production software called production minds, I feel as though students would benefit from this software as some students find it extremely hard to get pre production done. The software looks good and easy to get used too.

 Price; you get a one month free trial and then costs 5.99 monthly.

Year 2 -

Hardware - I think the college should buy more tripods so that more students can use them when they are all booked out, this would benefit the students and the teachers as the shots we take on cameras without tripods when they are booked out are very shaky and with more tripods the work would be more steady and clear.

The Commissioning Process

The commissioning process;

Being a writer can be hard dealing with everything on your own so you might need an agent if you feel you need one and it would benefit in your writing, an agent is someone who acts on behalf of you helping you meet targets and organising meetings for you to tell your script, an agent can also protect you from all legal and ethical problems. If i was a writer I would consider an agent as they could benefit  me with meetings and legal obligations.

Lindsay Bradbury is a BBC commissioning editor, she has involvement in every stage of production including pre production and post production, they support the rest of the team and are the key element to a production. E- Commissioning is sending your initial ideas to a company for them to look at,  these ideas are not for the public as they are like a pilot show where it is only seen by the company and the company decides whether it will go any further for the public to see.

To get my single camera drama short film' The Untold' produced into a proper film with the warner brothers I would have to go through the producer and they would decide whether it adapted into a film or not. Things at warner brothers gets green lit by producers and agents working with them funding it, warner brothers would not buy it though, an independent film company would.

Pat Higgins the writer of strippers vs werewolves had a one off payment from the company who bought the story off him, this means Pat Higgins has no involvement or say in what happens with that production now, he also has no ownership over the story after he had received the payment.

Errors and Omission Insurance - What is it?
A professional liability insurance that protects companies and individuals against claims made by clients for inadequate work or negligent actions. Errors and omissions insurance often covers both court costs and any settlements up to the amount specified on the insurance contract. You could hire a script doctor to polish up your script to ensure you will not have a lawsuit against you. You could need E&O Insurance as there could be mistakes in your script or characteristics as there could be someone like one of your characters and the real person could sue you for making them out to be someone else.

Devising and Planning a Soundtrack

Introduction

I will be devising and planning a soundtrack, I will be summarising the ways I might be asked to devise a soundtrack, which includes; who would work it out with me and what different input they might have, who else would be involved, I will be explaining the terms picture lock and spotting, and explaining the best practise in recording sound securely and what other plans they would have. I will also be establishing the sounds I want, where and how they will be sourced or recorded and what purpose they would have. I will be using links for my own pre production for the short film I made and providing explanations for downloading music from the internet and other relevant issues.

In the 'Real World'

- Who would work it out with you and what different input would they have?
The soundtrack would be worked out by many people, the Director, Producer, Sound Editor and the Editor, there would be many different impacts as the Director may want something different to the Producer but they know what they want so it would be easier to work out, some things could go wrong though, as some sound might not be greatly recorded so they might have to compromise and change the soundtrack around. I think the sound editor would know mostly what they were doing as they have worked on sound longer than the Director or Producer and this would be the biggest impact on the soundtrack.

- Who else would be involved?
As I said above the Director, Producer, Sound Editor and Editor would also be involved with the soundtrack planner and others would also be involved like the sound recorders and locations reporters because they could of recorded a sound at a location for the editors to add in.

- Explain terms such as Spotting and Picture Lock

  • Spotting - The Spotting Session usually takes place after the filming and editing phases of a production have been completed. At the Spotting Session, the director and composer agree on what types of music will be used in a project and on where in the film (usually time code locations) specific musical cues will occur. The Music Editor documents these decisions and provides Spotting Notes to the composer and director for reference.
  • Picture Lock - Picture lock is a stage in editing a film or editing a television production. It is the stage prior to on line editing when all changes to the film or television program cut have been done and approved. It is then sent to subsequent stages in the process, such as an line editing and audio mixing. Any last minute changes can force portions of subsequent work to be re-done.
- Best practise in recording sound securely
This is just making sure you have a back up plan in case the sound you have fails to record, like having extra sound sources like more boom microphones but also making sure you have a clapper board to sync the sound and the image later in the editing process.

Establishing the sounds I want

The sounds I want in my film are mostly ambience sounds to give the film a better thriller feel to it as the images do that but the sounds do it more, I also want music throughout my whole film, a scary, eerie, uncomfortable track to make the audience scared, I will also add sound effects to the end of it like police sirens and a heartbeat, I want those sound effects to be when the tension is running high in the last shot, some of these sounds will be off of freesound.org and some of the dialogue will be recorded when filming the production and some will be location recorded at the same location of filming but just with a clearer sound as I am not expecting it to be perfect the whole way through. I will be using foley, ADR and location recorded sound throughout my whole production.

- Potential Equipment to choose from

The sound equipment to choose from varies from clip microphones to shot guns to built in microphones on the camera. We initially used the boom pole and shot gun to record sound for our short film and it worked nicely as it picked up sound from further away and it was clear and vivid. This enabled us to speak how we wanted to speak and not have to exaggerate our voices to much so it seemed more real and didnt seem too much.

We wanted clip microphones as a back up source in case the boom pole and shot gun failed but they were not in a working order and are not as good as the shot gun, if we had used the clip mics it would not have been that good in sound because they do not pick up a lot of sound around them and they tend to not work when batteries need replacing every ten minutes, also you would of had to spend more time on hiding the wire on the actors/actresses and this would of wasted valued production time.

In the last part of our filming we tried to book out another shot gun and boom pole as the sound was clear and good with our film but our technicians office did not have any left and we did not have anyy clip microphones either our only other back up source was to use the built in microphone in the camera which surprisingly worked well as the shots we had left to create were not too far away from the camera and if they were we just recorded the sound on to the camera and made sure it was close enough for the camera microphone to pick it up and then added it over on to the image, luckily the sound that needed to be recorded again did not have to be synced as my head was buried in my knees and you don't see my face.

Another sound recording device we could of used is the BOOM sound recorder, this is good for recording a script over a presentation if you are holding it or sitting down next to it, we decided not to use it as the actresses were fully in the shot and we could not have got it close enough to hear the sound clearly without getting the recorder in the view of the camera.

Overall I think our choice of sound recording was a good idea and I would use the boom pole and shot gun again, they made a good impact on the images in my film and the sound was bold and clear, I would also use the built in microphone again as it surprisingly worked really well with the shots we created.

- What software do you intend to use and why?
I intend to use Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack as these are the editing and soundtrack software I am most used to, I will probably use final cut pro more than soundtrack as I know how to use it better than soundtrack and I feel more comfortable using it. We also used freesound.org as we didn't want to get into legal or ethical problems and freesound.org  is copyright free and has no legal considerations to think of.

- Provide explanations of MP3, AIFF and WAVE files? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each?

  • MP3 - a means of compressing a sound sequence into a very small file, to enable digital storage and transmission.
  • AIFF - Audio Interchange File Format is an audio file format standard used for storing sound data for personal computers and other electronic audio devices.
  • WAVE - a format for storing uncompressed audio files.
- Provide explanations of the following and relevant issues connected with them:

  • Public domain materials;

Video Editing

Introduction

I will be discussing different editing techniques and different editors and then comparing them and explaining how it has made an impact on how I edit today, I will be comparing, Eisenstein, The Lumiere Brothers and Chris Columbus, these are all from different times using different technology.

Sergei Eisenstein

Sergei Eisenstein was a pioneer in the use of the Montage, he added shots one after the other and manipulates the audiences emotions using these shots. This was the way Sergei Eisenstein edited, the montage created film metaphors using one shot and changing the other shots, for example;

This could be the first shot and the audience would not know what he is looking or smiling at, so it is already playing with the audiences emotions as they are asking questions.

If this was the next picture the audience would think that the man and woman are in love as they are looking at each other and it would be like shot reverse shot.

If this was the shot after the man you would think that he is hungry and he is going to enjoy this yummy dinner.

If this was the shot after the man you would think that he had killed this woman and he is happy about it. This is the way Eisenstein plays with the audience and is truly amazing how he does this, the man goes from being in love, to enjoying his dinner to killing someone.

I think that Eisenstein has a massive impact on filmakers and editors today as the montage is an inspirational technique that will be used for many more years.

The Lumiere Brothers

Auguste and Louis Lumiere were early film makers, there films were more documentaries than films and never used to run more than 50 seconds, their idea was to leave the camera rolling on something they wanted to film. The Cinematograph was not invented by the Lumiere brothers but was paid for by these as the inventor did not have enough money, it was much better than the Kinetograph which they got the idea from.

This was the Cinematograph, the camera with a projector and printer - one of the greatest creations.

This was one of their first films, it was just a train arriving somewhere and a load of workers getting on it, the film lasts no more than 50 seconds and they left the camera rolling in one place until it stopped.

The Difference

The difference between these two early film makers is that Sergei Eisensteins films ttold more of a story than the Lumiere Brothers did, Eisenstein used a montage of pictures to tell a story where as the Lumiere brothers filmed real life things like the train arriving at a station and filming it until it stopped this is more like a documentary than a story film.

Chris Columbus

Chris Columbus is known for directing Harry Potter the Philosophers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Home Alone and Home Alone 2, he also worked as a screen writer with Steven Spielberg on films The Goonies and Gremlins.

In Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone he uses the Montage theory and the Lumiere brothers theory as in one of the scenes where Harry, Ron and Hermoine meet for the first time you see the train coming towards you this is very similar to the lumiere brothers film where the train is arriving at a station, I think Chris Columbus used this shot as it would of had a bigger impact and feel on where they might be going. Columbus also uses Montage as when they meet he uses shot reverse shot for the two boys and this implies they are going to be good friends from the different shots and editing techniques.

I think that Sergei Eisenstein and Auguste and Louis Lumiere made a massive impact on film makers today as they still use their techniques and still being used in this day and age, the early film makers are an inpiration to film makers today and I feel they will be later in life also.

How I Edit

The way I edit depends on what type of shots, angles and what type of story I have, although I have used both of these techniques for example in my recent short film 'The Untold' I used the Montage quite a lot and also used the Lumiere brothers techniques, I feel that these early film makers have helped students studying film today as we know how film started and where cameras first came from and different techniques. In my music video I filmed the view of being on a train and let the camera roll, I wouldnt of thought of this if it wasn't for the Lumiere brothers, and it also helped my music video look better. I have gained more skills and techniques from all film makers.

Multi Camera Techniques

Introduction

I will be discussing the different techniques used in a multi camera production, what a multi camera production is, the advantages of a multi camera production and how multi camera production is used shot by shot.

What is a multi camera production?

A multi camera production is a production that is filmed with more than one camera, this is usually used within a certain TV category like The Jeremy Kyle and other reality shows, this is because there is a lot going on in these type of shots and they need to catch everything on camera. Our live news show was a multi camera production, it was multi camera so that we could catch everything that was happening and so we could change shots without stopping and starting, this was useful because we could change from one presenter to the other.

Advantages of multi-camera

There are many advantages to doing a multi camera production, the first advantage is being able to film from different angles without stopping and starting, an example of this would be my live show as we went through the whole twenty minutes without stopping and starting but getting different angles and shots at once. Another advantage would be catching everything at once, for example on The Jeremy Kyle Show there are cameras everywhere as a lot is going on, they have cameras backstage incase guests run off, they have cameras on the guests and also have cameras on the audience and Jeremy. Live programs such as The X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing use the multi camera set up, as it means the audience can look at the program from different perspectives.  The reason for using multi camera set up on Live shows is so the camera’s can be set up in place and ready for each shot, if the program was shot single camera, it would make it much more difficult to keep the pace of the show, and the camera would change position each time it was moved. There are many more advantages such as there will be less continuity errors as the actors will not look different and you can catch them from different angles, this would also save time on post-production.

Examples from TV and News

The Jeremy Kyle show uses a multi camera set up as a lot of things are going on and they have to be able to catch them for example;

If you have this scene and someone stands up, you would have to catch their emotions, the person at the other end of the argument, the audience and Jeremy, if this was a single camera show you would not be able to do it as you wouldn't be able to catch everyone's expressions and feelings.

Another example would be a live news show;

You would not be able to film this single camera as it is live and you would have to edit the show on a vision mixer, the news show camera set up for two presenters is two cameras in the picture above so you can have one focusing on one presenter and the other camera focusing on the other  presenter, this is a good way to do it so you can catch both the presenters talking but switch the cameras on the vision mixer when editing.

Research Techniques.

Introduction

I will be discussing different research techniques in TV and Film, these techniques will include the difference between primary and secondary research, what the purpose of research is, why it is needed and some other important elements.

Primary Research

Primary Research is any type of research that you go out and collect yourself, an example of this would be going to interview someone and finding out what they have to say for yourself, another example is collecting surveys or getting observations, primary research always has to be your own research. We had collected primary research for one of our stories, the terrible news in Seevic college about the man on fire in his own car, our primary research was talking to some of the students who go to Seevic College, this helped our story as it seemed more interesting to speak to some of the students and to get a sense of how they felt on that tragic night.

Secondary Research

Secondary Research is not your own research so you would collect it from the internet or a newspaper, secondary research is usually used to back your own primary research up, this helps evidence your story. Quite a lot of our research was secondary as it was hard to find more local news in little time, one of our stories was about a drug raid in Pitsea and we had secondary research on this from the internet and in the newspaper, secondary research helped our live production a lot as we were not able to speak to police officers and drug dealers about this incident.

What is the purpose of research?

The main purpose of research is to inform people about what is going on and to give evidence of what your story is about, I think there are many different purposes for different types of research in TV and Documentary, Research helps to plan and gather information on a certain topic, for example in my live news show I had to gather primary and secondary research in order to help tell the story which I was focusing on. For example in our live production the purpose of our research was to inform people about it, on the story about the rising prices in train tickets.

Why is it needed? Who needs it? Who does the research?

Research is needed for many reasons, most of the reasons are covered in the purpose of Research but the main reason for research being needed is to learn a little more about it, for example in a news show they collect a lot of information which is given to them and they have to know a little bit about it before they can produce this story on a live show. In our live show research was needed so that the presenters could learn more about our stories like the train ticket story and the incident that happened to the cab driver when he demanded is fare money, our presenters needed to know more about the awful incident that happened so that they could feel the sadness in it and so the audience could see that.

Many people need research, but mostly an audience, without research they would not know what is going on in the world, research is important as you cannot produce a story without evidence to back it up. Or presenters and crew needed research for our live show so they knew more about the stories.

Research is done by the Researcher, as a researcher you would support the producer by finding the information and people and places needed for TV and Documentary, for example if someone was needed for an interview the Researcher would research on how to get there, what places are good to meet, what information would be vital to know about the interviewee and much more. In our live show I was the researcher for some of the stories, I had done the research on the taxi driver who had been attacked, the story about the two young girls who were being lured into a van by two men and the researcher for the theft story about the two wanted women in Basildon, some of these stories were harder to find than others as our live show was about local news and many big stories were out of the local area.

My News Show - Examples

In our live show we had a lot of different stories and a lot of vital information to collect, One of the stories was how the prices in train tickets have risen and we had to gather primary and secondary information, in our primary research we included interviews, phone calls and an interview with one of the security guards at a local train station, this research helped a lot as it was our own research and we could really get how they felt about the rising prices in train tickets, we spoke to locals who got the train daily, some said it hadn't really affected them and others were very annoyed at this. Our secondary research was off the internet and on the c2c website, this website showed a table of last years fares and this years fares which was massively different in prices, this helped a lot as it backed our own primary research up. The purpose of this research was to inform people about this increasing problem.

Pulp Fiction Narrative Theories

There are a few narrative theories in Pulp Fiction one of them being Claude Levi Strauss' theory Binary Oppositions, these Binary Oppositions are as follows;
Good - Bad
Men - Women
Friends - Enemies
Black - White

These oppositions are conventional and unconventional as in the scene where Marcellus and Butch, who are enemies, have been kidnapped and Butch manages to get away and then goes back to save Marcellus from being sexually assaulted, this is unconventional as they are supposed to be enemies so the audience wouldn't expect him to save Marcellus but he does and that is why it is unconventional, these theories are conventional as well though as you would expect the film to have some sort of opposition like friends and enemies and good and bad.

The other narrative theory in Pulp Fiction is Vladimir Propps theory which was concluding that all the characters could be resolved into 7 broad character functions in the 100 tales he analysed: but I also think this can be used in Pulp Fiction as the characters are all villains, heroes, doners, helpers, and the other characters. For example Vincent (John Travolta) is a hero and a villain in a way because he is a 'Gangster' and kills people, also dealing drugs for his boss Marcellus but he is a hero for saving Mia when she has a drug overdose and nearly dies, another example would be Lance (Eric Stoltz) he is a villain because he is a criminal for being a drug dealer but he is also the helper for assisting Vincent in saving Mia.

Script for Sight and Sound Presentation

Script.

Slide 1.

Another example of the film being unconventional is when ‘Hunny Bunny’ and ‘Pumpkin’  are talking about robbing liqueur stores and then ‘Pumpkin’ says ‘Why don’t we rob this place’ this surprises me as I wouldn’t expect such a ‘loved-up’ couple to rob a diner! The dialogue in both these sequences are unconventional but as for the costumes and other elements these are conventional for example two gangsters in an expensive car in their expensive suits going on a job – this is what I expect for gangsters to do.

Slide 2.

For example at the very start when ‘Hunny Bunny’ and ‘Pumpkin’ are about to rob the diner and it then goes onto the credits, near the end it goes back to the diner when Vincent and Jules are having something to eat in that same diner that they are about to rob.

Slide 3.

Tarantino plays with these oppositions, for example when Marcellus and Butch are being held hostage and Butch manages to get out without his enemy Marcellus,  in the end Butch goes back to save him from being raped and that plays with the audience as you wouldn’t expect him to save his worst enemy.

Slide 4.

In the pre credits scene where ‘Hunny Bunny’ and ‘Pumpkin’ are in the diner the camera uses ‘Shot Reverse Shot’ I thought this was used really well in this scene.

Again in the first scene with the two lovers, I don’t think that studio lighting was used as they are sitting in front of a big window, so I think natural lighting was used, that’s not to say that it was all natural lighting used in the film though.

Slide 6.

In both opening scenes of Apocalypse now and Saving Private Ryan both sounds compliment the visuals even if you cant see them, In saving private ryan if you didn’t have the sound of the waves with the visual of the man then changing to thevisual of the waves you wouldn’t really get it, but doing this implies to us that its his memory of the waves and they were so distinctive and choppy which connotes a bad memory.

Slide 7.

For example, if we were to watch saving private ryan at the cinema with a surround sound system and a bigger screen we would take much more with us like the sound of the waves crashing against the stone than we would watching on a laptop with a small speaker, in an environment like a cinema i think you are more likely to get every single detail than you are to at home.

Slide 8.

In this scene everything seems studio recorded like when you can hear the man’s hand shaking with bullets in his hand and the sound of the chain rattling, this seems studio recorded to me as the waves disappeared and little sounds like this overpowered them. The impact on the audience with the first scene in Apocalypse Now is very confusing because there is internal diagetic sound which means its voices in his head, at first I thought he was talking but it was his thoughts.

Slide 9.

The mood created from Saving Private Ryan from the sound is sad and I think even if you closed your eyes watching the film you would be able to tell that it’s about an army as the sounds link together and create visuals in your head, with the sound of the flag and the drums.

Soundtrack - Introductory Exercise

Introduction;

You have a character that is feeling stressed, think of as many ways you can tell the audience this through sound alone.

Stressed Character;
Quiet ( uncomfortable silence )
Banging
Eerie
Tapping Fingers
Deep Breathing
Increasing Volume
Echo
Heartbeat
Footsteps
Repetitive Noises
High Pitched
Classical Music
Voices
Shouting
Tears
Rustling
Inner Thoughts
Clock Ticking
Sirens
Screams
Music
Exaggerated Sounds
Gushing Wind

Audience;
How do audiences listen to soundtracks? Think about the space, the environment and the speakers?

The audience have a different view of the film in different environments with different speakers and tones, for example if you were to watch a horror film in the cinema you are more likely to get scared as the speakers are surrounding you and are louder than you are at home or watching on a smaller screen with smaller speakers.

The reason for this is that on a 5.1 speaker, the ones you get in a cinema, the sound is much louder and is surrounding you in all areas, even if you are sitting right at the back of the cinema you are more likely to hear better than sitting right in front of the TV with a built in stereo at home.

5.1

The sounds;

The video clip I am going to talk about is the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, the sounds in this clip are very strong sounds which imply strong feelings - like when you can hear the waves but cannot see them shows that it was a vivid memory and has stayed with him, I think these waves were studio recorded and then added into the film after it was in picture lock. I think that the waves were recorded using this method is because they wouldn't of been as strong if they were location recorded because you would of had all of the background noises like sea wind and other ambience sounds, using this method with this particular sound compliments the picture more because it implies a stronger memory with the stronger sounds.The sound of the chain rattling and the hand shaking had a really big impact on me as the waves were dimmed out so you could not really hear them and the chain rattling insinuated that it was important to the character, also at the very start you can hear drums and waves with only a few images this immediately connoted to me that the film was about the army. I think that if these sounds were recorded differently the audience would not have been as intrigued because these sounds recorded using these methods compliment the picture very well and even without the picture you would of been able to make those images in your head.

The Treatment

Title - The Untold

Genre - Thriller/Drama

Type - Short film

Target Audience - Our target audience would probably be young adults and up to the age of 30, I also think woman are more likely to watch it as both actors in the short film are women.

Duration - This short film will only last ten minutes as this was the time guide we were given by our lecturer.

Outline -
  • Beginning; At the beginning the two girls come I from a night out ad one of them has blood on their hands, but they don't know how it got there, who's it is, or what they have done. This gets the audience asking questions.
  • Middle; In the middle of the short film, there is a stranger that is blackmailing them for what they've done and is searching for them in the house, you never get to see the stranger until the end which makes the film more of a mystery.
  • End; At the end the stranger has one of the girls and tension is running high as they try to get away from him, the end concludes in Maddie being unconscious on the floor and the stranger and Deanna are missing.

  • Music; There will be quite a lot of music in the short film but this will be added in when we do the soundtrack.
Rationale - The reason for choosing this idea is because we both wanted to do a thriller because it has to be a drama and we wanted to do something a little different that relationship trouble and other usual dramas. I feel Dee and I have the skills and techniques to do this and we can help each other work, we also have very good equipment supplied by the college to help us with this single camera production.

Primary and Secondary Research - Primary Research is not needed as it is not a factual programme, although we have fund some secondary research for our production, the research includes similar films with a similar storyline, articles about home intrusion and articles about emotional blackmail, the research contributes to our single camera production and is also very helpful.
