The Futures of Media Technologies
5 Year Plan
Year 1 -
Hardware - The new piece of hardware I think we should consider buying for the college is GoPros as we can catch much more exciting footage and we can tie them places you can't with a massive canon or sony. The specific GoPro I think we should invest in is the HERO3+ Black Edition
http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero3-black-edition?gclid=CjkKEQjwlIqdBRDy6JSK4Lmn1akBEiQAVa9dPYdwjlkxr89TElRohc0yTAXomwsInKdJ-VmPk4B6mwnw_wcB
Price ; £359.99
Software - The new piece of software I think we should get is a pre production software called production minds, I feel as though students would benefit from this software as some students find it extremely hard to get pre production done. The software looks good and easy to get used too.

Price; you get a one month free trial and then costs 5.99 monthly.
Year 2 -
Hardware - I think the college should buy more tripods so that more students can use them when they are all booked out, this would benefit the students and the teachers as the shots we take on cameras without tripods when they are booked out are very shaky and with more tripods the work would be more steady and clear.

The Commissioning Process
The commissioning process;
Lindsay Bradbury is a BBC commissioning editor, she has involvement in every stage of production including pre production and post production, they support the rest of the team and are the key element to a production. E- Commissioning is sending your initial ideas to a company for them to look at, these ideas are not for the public as they are like a pilot show where it is only seen by the company and the company decides whether it will go any further for the public to see.
To get my single camera drama short film' The Untold' produced into a proper film with the warner brothers I would have to go through the producer and they would decide whether it adapted into a film or not. Things at warner brothers gets green lit by producers and agents working with them funding it, warner brothers would not buy it though, an independent film company would.
Pat Higgins the writer of strippers vs werewolves had a one off payment from the company who bought the story off him, this means Pat Higgins has no involvement or say in what happens with that production now, he also has no ownership over the story after he had received the payment.
Errors and Omission Insurance - What is it?
A professional liability insurance that protects companies and individuals against claims made by clients for inadequate work or negligent actions. Errors and omissions insurance often covers both court costs and any settlements up to the amount specified on the insurance contract. You could hire a script doctor to polish up your script to ensure you will not have a lawsuit against you. You could need E&O Insurance as there could be mistakes in your script or characteristics as there could be someone like one of your characters and the real person could sue you for making them out to be someone else.

Devising and Planning a Soundtrack
Introduction
In the 'Real World'
- Spotting - The Spotting Session usually takes place after the filming and editing phases of a production have been completed. At the Spotting Session, the director and composer agree on what types of music will be used in a project and on where in the film (usually time code locations) specific musical cues will occur. The Music Editor documents these decisions and provides Spotting Notes to the composer and director for reference.
- Picture Lock - Picture lock is a stage in editing a film or editing a television production. It is the stage prior to on line editing when all changes to the film or television program cut have been done and approved. It is then sent to subsequent stages in the process, such as an line editing and audio mixing. Any last minute changes can force portions of subsequent work to be re-done.
Establishing the sounds I want
Pre Production Links
I intend to use Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack as these are the editing and soundtrack software I am most used to, I will probably use final cut pro more than soundtrack as I know how to use it better than soundtrack and I feel more comfortable using it. We also used freesound.org as we didn't want to get into legal or ethical problems and freesound.org is copyright free and has no legal considerations to think of.
- Provide explanations of MP3, AIFF and WAVE files? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each?
- MP3 - a means of compressing a sound sequence into a very small file, to enable digital storage and transmission.
- AIFF - Audio Interchange File Format is an audio file format standard used for storing sound data for personal computers and other electronic audio devices.
- WAVE - a format for storing uncompressed audio files.
- Public domain materials;

Video Editing
Introduction
I will be discussing different editing techniques and different editors and then comparing them and explaining how it has made an impact on how I edit today, I will be comparing, Eisenstein, The Lumiere Brothers and Chris Columbus, these are all from different times using different technology.
Sergei Eisenstein
Sergei Eisenstein was a pioneer in the use of the Montage, he added shots one after the other and manipulates the audiences emotions using these shots. This was the way Sergei Eisenstein edited, the montage created film metaphors using one shot and changing the other shots, for example;

Multi Camera Techniques
Introduction
I will be discussing the different techniques used in a multi camera production, what a multi camera production is, the advantages of a multi camera production and how multi camera production is used shot by shot.
What is a multi camera production?
A multi camera production is a production that is filmed with more than one camera, this is usually used within a certain TV category like The Jeremy Kyle and other reality shows, this is because there is a lot going on in these type of shots and they need to catch everything on camera. Our live news show was a multi camera production, it was multi camera so that we could catch everything that was happening and so we could change shots without stopping and starting, this was useful because we could change from one presenter to the other.
Advantages of multi-camera
There are many advantages to doing a multi camera production, the first advantage is being able to film from different angles without stopping and starting, an example of this would be my live show as we went through the whole twenty minutes without stopping and starting but getting different angles and shots at once. Another advantage would be catching everything at once, for example on The Jeremy Kyle Show there are cameras everywhere as a lot is going on, they have cameras backstage incase guests run off, they have cameras on the guests and also have cameras on the audience and Jeremy. Live programs such as The X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing use the multi camera set up, as it means the audience can look at the program from different perspectives. The reason for using multi camera set up on Live shows is so the camera’s can be set up in place and ready for each shot, if the program was shot single camera, it would make it much more difficult to keep the pace of the show, and the camera would change position each time it was moved. There are many more advantages such as there will be less continuity errors as the actors will not look different and you can catch them from different angles, this would also save time on post-production.

Research Techniques.
I will be discussing different research techniques in TV and Film, these techniques will include the difference between primary and secondary research, what the purpose of research is, why it is needed and some other important elements.
Primary Research
Primary Research is any type of research that you go out and collect yourself, an example of this would be going to interview someone and finding out what they have to say for yourself, another example is collecting surveys or getting observations, primary research always has to be your own research. We had collected primary research for one of our stories, the terrible news in Seevic college about the man on fire in his own car, our primary research was talking to some of the students who go to Seevic College, this helped our story as it seemed more interesting to speak to some of the students and to get a sense of how they felt on that tragic night.
Secondary Research
Secondary Research is not your own research so you would collect it from the internet or a newspaper, secondary research is usually used to back your own primary research up, this helps evidence your story. Quite a lot of our research was secondary as it was hard to find more local news in little time, one of our stories was about a drug raid in Pitsea and we had secondary research on this from the internet and in the newspaper, secondary research helped our live production a lot as we were not able to speak to police officers and drug dealers about this incident.
What is the purpose of research?
The main purpose of research is to inform people about what is going on and to give evidence of what your story is about, I think there are many different purposes for different types of research in TV and Documentary, Research helps to plan and gather information on a certain topic, for example in my live news show I had to gather primary and secondary research in order to help tell the story which I was focusing on. For example in our live production the purpose of our research was to inform people about it, on the story about the rising prices in train tickets.
Why is it needed? Who needs it? Who does the research?
Research is needed for many reasons, most of the reasons are covered in the purpose of Research but the main reason for research being needed is to learn a little more about it, for example in a news show they collect a lot of information which is given to them and they have to know a little bit about it before they can produce this story on a live show. In our live show research was needed so that the presenters could learn more about our stories like the train ticket story and the incident that happened to the cab driver when he demanded is fare money, our presenters needed to know more about the awful incident that happened so that they could feel the sadness in it and so the audience could see that.
Many people need research, but mostly an audience, without research they would not know what is going on in the world, research is important as you cannot produce a story without evidence to back it up. Or presenters and crew needed research for our live show so they knew more about the stories.
Research is done by the Researcher, as a researcher you would support the producer by finding the information and people and places needed for TV and Documentary, for example if someone was needed for an interview the Researcher would research on how to get there, what places are good to meet, what information would be vital to know about the interviewee and much more. In our live show I was the researcher for some of the stories, I had done the research on the taxi driver who had been attacked, the story about the two young girls who were being lured into a van by two men and the researcher for the theft story about the two wanted women in Basildon, some of these stories were harder to find than others as our live show was about local news and many big stories were out of the local area.
My News Show - Examples
In our live show we had a lot of different stories and a lot of vital information to collect, One of the stories was how the prices in train tickets have risen and we had to gather primary and secondary information, in our primary research we included interviews, phone calls and an interview with one of the security guards at a local train station, this research helped a lot as it was our own research and we could really get how they felt about the rising prices in train tickets, we spoke to locals who got the train daily, some said it hadn't really affected them and others were very annoyed at this. Our secondary research was off the internet and on the c2c website, this website showed a table of last years fares and this years fares which was massively different in prices, this helped a lot as it backed our own primary research up. The purpose of this research was to inform people about this increasing problem.

Pulp Fiction Narrative Theories
The other narrative theory in Pulp Fiction is Vladimir Propps theory which was concluding that all the characters could be resolved into 7 broad character functions in the 100 tales he analysed: but I also think this can be used in Pulp Fiction as the characters are all villains, heroes, doners, helpers, and the other characters. For example Vincent (John Travolta) is a hero and a villain in a way because he is a 'Gangster' and kills people, also dealing drugs for his boss Marcellus but he is a hero for saving Mia when she has a drug overdose and nearly dies, another example would be Lance (Eric Stoltz) he is a villain because he is a criminal for being a drug dealer but he is also the helper for assisting Vincent in saving Mia.

Script for Sight and Sound Presentation
Script.
Slide 1.
Another example of the film being unconventional is when ‘Hunny Bunny’ and ‘Pumpkin’ are talking about robbing liqueur stores and then ‘Pumpkin’ says ‘Why don’t we rob this place’ this surprises me as I wouldn’t expect such a ‘loved-up’ couple to rob a diner! The dialogue in both these sequences are unconventional but as for the costumes and other elements these are conventional for example two gangsters in an expensive car in their expensive suits going on a job – this is what I expect for gangsters to do.
Slide 2.
For example at the very start when ‘Hunny Bunny’ and ‘Pumpkin’ are about to rob the diner and it then goes onto the credits, near the end it goes back to the diner when Vincent and Jules are having something to eat in that same diner that they are about to rob.
Slide 3.
Tarantino plays with these oppositions, for example when Marcellus and Butch are being held hostage and Butch manages to get out without his enemy Marcellus, in the end Butch goes back to save him from being raped and that plays with the audience as you wouldn’t expect him to save his worst enemy.
Slide 4.
In the pre credits scene where ‘Hunny Bunny’ and ‘Pumpkin’ are in the diner the camera uses ‘Shot Reverse Shot’ I thought this was used really well in this scene.
Again in the first scene with the two lovers, I don’t think that studio lighting was used as they are sitting in front of a big window, so I think natural lighting was used, that’s not to say that it was all natural lighting used in the film though.
Slide 6.
In both opening scenes of Apocalypse now and Saving Private Ryan both sounds compliment the visuals even if you cant see them, In saving private ryan if you didn’t have the sound of the waves with the visual of the man then changing to thevisual of the waves you wouldn’t really get it, but doing this implies to us that its his memory of the waves and they were so distinctive and choppy which connotes a bad memory.
Slide 7.
For example, if we were to watch saving private ryan at the cinema with a surround sound system and a bigger screen we would take much more with us like the sound of the waves crashing against the stone than we would watching on a laptop with a small speaker, in an environment like a cinema i think you are more likely to get every single detail than you are to at home.
Slide 8.
In this scene everything seems studio recorded like when you can hear the man’s hand shaking with bullets in his hand and the sound of the chain rattling, this seems studio recorded to me as the waves disappeared and little sounds like this overpowered them. The impact on the audience with the first scene in Apocalypse Now is very confusing because there is internal diagetic sound which means its voices in his head, at first I thought he was talking but it was his thoughts.
Slide 9.
The mood created from Saving Private Ryan from the sound is sad and I think even if you closed your eyes watching the film you would be able to tell that it’s about an army as the sounds link together and create visuals in your head, with the sound of the flag and the drums.
